Job description

Role Overview

The Naval Service is Ireland’s main seagoing defence organisation, tasked with meeting both routine and emergency maritime defence needs. It is seeking suitably qualified people to join as Direct Entry Operations Branch Officers in a leadership position focused on vessel operations, safety, and mission delivery.

What the Role Involves

  • You will be responsible for the safe running and operational readiness of a Naval Service ship.
  • The role includes bridge watchkeeping, safe navigation oversight, monitoring surrounding maritime traffic, and safeguarding the ship and crew.
  • You will also command boarding teams during fisheries protection, anti-smuggling, and drug-interdiction operations.
  • With experience, Operations Officers can advance toward Commanding Officer responsibilities, leading a vessel and crew on both domestic and overseas assignments.
  • The position provides ongoing leadership growth, specialist training, and opportunities to move up in rank and responsibility.

Eligibility and Entry Conditions

  • Applicants must hold one of the following: a Department of Transport Certificate of Competency (Deck Officer) Class 1, 2, or 3 with watchkeeping experience; a recognised Naval Watchkeeping Certificate; or an equivalent qualification accepted by the Minister for Defence.
  • Candidates must be younger than 50 years on 31 December of the application year and may need to provide proof of age at the next stage.
  • A minimum height of 5 ft 2 in (157.48 cm) is required, and height will be checked during selection.
  • No tattoos may be visible above the collar while serving in the Defence Forces; visible tattoos above the collar can prevent progression in the process.
  • Applicants must satisfy work permit eligibility rules for the Defence Forces, including at least 5 years of eligibility to remain in Ireland, and proof of work permit status may be requested.
  • Medical, physical, and security clearance standards must also be met as part of recruitment.
