Job description
Role overview
An Army Recruit is someone who joins the Defence Forces for General Service and, after finishing the initial training programme, advances to the rank of Private 2*. Once recruit training is completed, there are a range of career paths available across the different Corps.
What the role involves
The Defence Forces is seeking people interested in a demanding and rewarding military career. All successful applicants will receive training, but the role is suited to people who are willing to:
- Work in a disciplined military setting.
- Contribute effectively as part of a team.
- Perform well under pressure and in physically challenging conditions.
- Serve overseas when required by the Defence Forces.
Eligibility criteria
- Applicants must be between 18 and 39 years of age; proof of age will be needed if they progress further in the selection process.
- A minimum height of 5 ft 2 in (157.48 cm) is required, and height will be checked during selection.
- Tattoos must not be visible above the collar while serving; any visible tattoos in that area may prevent progression.
- Candidates must satisfy the work-permit eligibility rules for service in the Defence Forces, which means they need at least 5 years of eligibility to remain in Ireland. Evidence of this will be requested with the application.
- Medical, physical, and security clearance standards must also be met as part of recruitment.
Training and posting
- Recruit training lasts 12 weeks, followed by a 12-week 3-star training course.
- Depending on the Corps joined, additional specialist or career training may be available.
- Training may take place at any Defence Forces location, and after training, posting can be to any Defence Forces location as required.
- The organisation will try to place recruits in their preferred Unit where possible, subject to operational needs.
- Applicants are posted to a Unit within the Brigade they apply to: 1 Bde, 2 Bde, or DFTC.
- After qualification, recruits serve as a three-star private in one of these Service Corps: Infantry, Artillery, Cavalry, Transport, Communications Information Systems, Engineers, Ordnance, Military Policy, or Medical Corps.
- Newly qualified Private Soldiers are encouraged to apply for further Army courses, which can lead to specialisation, promotion, and overseas service.
