Job description
Role overview
A Naval Service Recruit joins the General Service within the Naval Service, the maritime branch of the Irish Defence Forces. The role is built around recruit training and Able Rate development, with a strong focus on discipline, fitness, seamanship, weapons training, and naval operations. This is a chance to become part of a trained, professional team responsible for safeguarding Ireland’s territorial waters.
What the training involves
New recruits are fully trained for the role, but success depends on entering a demanding military setting with the right attitude and commitment.
Eligibility and entry conditions
- Applicants must be between 18 and 39 years old. Proof of age may be required at a later stage in the selection process.
- A minimum height of 5 ft 2 in (157.48 cm) is required, and measurement will form part of the selection process.
- No tattoos may be visible above the collar while serving in the Defence Forces. Visible tattoos in this area may prevent progression.
- Candidates must satisfy the working-permit requirements for service in the Defence Forces, which means having at least 5 years of eligibility to remain in Ireland. Evidence of this will be requested with the application.
- Medical, physical, and security clearance standards must also be met and will be assessed during recruitment.
Training and career path
- Selected recruits complete 13 weeks of basic recruit training designed to build fitness, discipline, motivation, and core military capability.
- After recruit training, candidates return to the Naval Base for Ordinary to Able Rate training and then move into branch training in Seamanship, Communications, Mechanicians, or Supplies.
- Once qualified, recruits are promoted to Able Rate and posted to a Naval Service ship for a two-year sea rotation.
- Typical duties include general upkeep, boat handling, firefighting, damage control, and supporting boarding teams in drug-interdiction operations.
- Additional specialist training is available for those who want to progress further in the Naval Service.
