Role overview
The Naval Service is Ireland’s main sea-going defence organisation, responsible for meeting both routine and emergency maritime defence needs. It is hiring qualified Electrical/Electronic Technicians to join as Direct Entry Electrical Artificers.
What the role involves
In this position, you will support the upkeep and reliability of onboard electrical and control systems across the fleet. The work covers power generation, electrical distribution, automated control equipment, troubleshooting, and emergency duties at sea.
Key duties
- Carry out maintenance, repairs, and fault-finding on shipboard electrical systems.
- Help keep the fleet operational by maintaining critical electrical infrastructure, including generation and distribution systems.
- Investigate and diagnose issues in electrical circuits, control systems, and automated machinery.
- Perform scheduled checks, preventive upkeep, and testing to confirm systems are working efficiently.
- Support emergency situations and drills, including firefighting and damage-control activities.
Education and qualification requirements
Applicants should hold one of the following qualifications:
- HETAC Level 7 in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Applied Physics & Instrumentation, or Marine Electrotechnology.
- QQI Level 6 Advanced Certificate Craft in Electrical, Electrical Instrumentation, or Instrumentation.
Selection and eligibility conditions
- Candidates must be between 18 and 39 years old. Proof of age may be required if you move forward in the process.
- Minimum height requirement: 5 ft 2 in (157.48 cm). Measurement will take place during selection.
- Tattoos visible above the collar are not permitted while serving in the Defence Forces. Visibility may be checked during selection, and this could affect progression.
- Applicants must satisfy the work-permit rules for serving in the Defence Forces, including at least 5 years’ eligibility to remain in Ireland. Evidence of this will be requested with the application.
- Medical, physical, and security vetting standards must be met and will be assessed during recruitment.
