About Lambton College
Lambton College is based on the traditional territory of the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa Nations. As the second-oldest publicly assisted college in Ontario, it has supported learners and communities for close to 60 years. Through its 2025–2029 strategic plan, the college is focused on strengthening student learning, advancing research and partnerships, and building a supportive workplace culture rooted in growth and collaboration.
The college’s approach is guided by the Lambton Way, which emphasizes community impact, professional development, and partnerships that benefit local, national, and global stakeholders.
About the Role
This is a temporary part-time support staff bargaining unit position reporting to the Associate Director, Student Success & Access Programs. The role is scheduled for 20 hours per week at an hourly wage of $30.50. It begins on August 3, 2026 and continues for 8 months.
The specialist will support students with dual diagnoses through the Accessibility Centre. The work focuses on helping students obtain the supports and accommodations they need to participate successfully in studies and campus life. The role also involves coordinating assistive technology and specialized resources, strengthening student independence, and working closely with faculty and the Student Success team to deliver integrated support.
Key Accountabilities
- Offer tailored support to students with dual diagnoses, such as a learning disability alongside a mental health condition.
- Assess the academic and personal barriers that affect this student group.
- Create and carry out accommodation plans based on each student’s functional needs.
- Make sure accommodations are applied consistently across classrooms, labs, shops, and experiential learning settings.
- Arrange access to specialized supports, including assistive software, hardware, and human assistance where needed.
- Help students use available resources effectively so they can build independence and succeed academically and personally.
- Serve as a point of contact with faculty to ensure accommodations are clearly understood and respected.
- Partner with the broader Student Success and Access team to provide coordinated support.
- Provide ongoing mentorship and regular check-ins to monitor student well-being and campus adjustment.
- Recognize non-academic barriers and refer students to external community supports, including mental health services such as CMHA, when appropriate.
- Keep detailed and confidential records of student contact and accommodation history in line with college policy and privacy laws.
- Monitor and report on the effect of funded supports to help demonstrate program value for future funding decisions.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a 3-year post-secondary diploma in Education, Psychology, Social Work, Special Education, or another field the college considers suitable. The role also calls for up to 3 years of hands-on experience in direct case management and student support services, including accessibility advising, learning strategies, assistive technology, alternate-format support, and accommodation training for people with disabilities.
Experience in a post-secondary environment is preferred.
Equity and Accommodation
Lambton College follows an inclusive, barrier-free hiring process. Candidates who need accommodation during the selection process are encouraged to notify the interview coordinator confidentially. The college is committed to equal opportunity and actively encourages applications from women, Indigenous peoples, racialized people, persons with disabilities, and 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. It also recognizes that structural barriers affect career paths and qualifications, and invites people to apply even if they feel the role may be a stretch, provided they meet the required qualifications.
Employee Benefits and Perks
The college offers a broad range of opportunities across unionized and non-unionized roles, along with competitive total compensation, wages, and benefits. Employees are supported through a workplace culture that values development, well-being, and professional growth.
Benefits include a defined benefit pension plan through CAAT, which provides predictable lifetime retirement income, survivor benefits, and early retirement options without the need to manage investment decisions.
Additional Information
Only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
The position is part-time, temporary, and on-site in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.
