Job description

Role Summary

This position offers a unique opportunity within the Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse Service at Aneurin Bevan University Health Board based at St Woolos Hospital in Newport. This role is a fixed-term maternity cover for 9 months heading from September 2026 to June 2027. The successful candidate will deliver expert nursing care, advice, and support to lung cancer patients, their families, and carers within the health board, collaborating closely with lung cancer and primary healthcare teams to ensure seamless patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist nursing expertise and clinical skills for patients affected by lung cancer and their support networks across the ABUHB sites.
  • Coordinate care alongside multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity and tailored support for patients.
  • Serve as an educational resource by engaging in and promoting training initiatives to enhance lung cancer care competency among healthcare professionals.
  • Support and operate protocol-driven nurse-led clinics under the guidance of the Clinical Nurse Specialist or Consultant Chest Physician.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should be enthusiastic and progressive nurses dedicated to delivering specialist support services for lung cancer patients. English speakers and Welsh speakers are equally welcomed, with Welsh language skills considered advantageous. Applicants currently employed elsewhere must secure their line manager's consent before applying due to the secondment nature of this role.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Mandatory possession of diploma or degree-level nursing education.
  • Post-registration nursing experience essential.
  • Preferred but not mandatory: continuing education in Oncology, Palliative Care, or Respiratory Health related to specialty.
  • Desirable previous experience in service development, management, or autonomous working initiative.

Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.
  • Counseling capabilities are a plus.
