About the Role

This opportunity sits within Queensland’s Department of Justice and offers the chance to contribute directly to law reform and the wider justice system. The Strategic Policy and Legislation area has broad responsibilities across the Justice portfolio, including coordinating the development and rollout of proposals for primary and subordinate legislation.

In this position, you will work on legislative and policy projects covering a wide range of justice matters. The role is based in Brisbane, and it may include telecommuting for part of the working week, subject to operational needs.

Team Overview

Strategic Policy and Legislation is made up of specialist teams working across different policy and legislative areas, along with a dedicated project team. Civil law work may involve courts legislation, domestic and family violence, child protection, guardianship and administration, privacy and right to information, civil liability, property, trust and succession law. Criminal law work may include the Criminal Code, sentencing, criminal procedure and jurisdiction, organised crime, drugs misuse and other areas of criminal justice reform. The successful candidate will be assigned to a team based on business requirements.

What You Will Do

You will advise on justice policy issues, help shape policy responses, and contribute to the development of legislation, strategies, and initiatives. The work also includes carrying out research, analysing policy matters, and supporting the delivery of relatively less complex legislative and policy projects.

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking someone who can understand current and emerging justice policy issues and assess their impact on the Queensland Government and the broader community. You should have experience in formulating policy and contributing to the development and implementation of legislation, especially in justice-related work. Strong planning and prioritisation skills are important, along with the ability to manage tasks in line with team commitments.

You will work well in a team, use tact and discretion when giving advice, and act with professional integrity at all levels. Strong written communication is essential, as is the ability to engage confidently with a variety of stakeholders while maintaining credibility and influence. Ethical, respectful, and culturally sensitive behaviour is expected.
