Job description

Job Summary

An Instrumentation Helper supports a Journeyman by helping lay out, fabricate, assemble, repair, and install instrumentation work. This includes electronic and pneumatic instruments, along with primary piping, tubing, and related instrumentation components.

Level IV workers are expected to handle Journeyman-level instrument tasks with little supervision.

Primary Duties

  • Support layout and installation work using drawings, blueprints, sketches, manuals, or other job instructions.
  • Measure, thread, cut, and assemble cable tray and cable tray support systems while working under a Journeyman's direction.
  • Help install tubing and clamps into cable tray systems.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, assemble, and install tubing and piping.
  • Use hand tools, hydraulic tools, and power tools as required.
  • Drill and tap structural holes and attach brackets, guards, and similar items under Journeyman guidance.
  • Operate site equipment when assigned, which may include man lifts, scissor lifts, overhead cranes, band saws, hose cutting/crimping equipment, pressure pumps, and hydraulic pumping units.
  • Inspect tools and keep them in good working condition.
  • Carry out other job-related duties as assigned by field supervision.

Qualifications

Experience expectations vary by level:

  • Level IV: 36+ months of heavy industrial instrument experience, or other verified experience/certifications in instrument work.
  • Level III: 24 to 35 months of heavy industrial instrument experience.
  • Level II: 12 to 23 months of heavy industrial instrument experience.
  • Level I: 0 to 11 months of heavy industrial instrument experience.
  • Also requires 1 year of industrial experience.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret instructions and technical documentation.
  • Personal hand tools that meet the Yates Industrial Minimum Tool List.
  • Successful completion of required safety training, including Confined Space, LOTO, and Working at Heights.

Physical Demands

  • Work may be performed in all weather conditions and at different temperatures.
  • Tasks may involve working at varying heights and elevations.
  • Exposure to windy and dusty environments is possible.
  • Noise levels may range from moderate to high.
  • The site may include vehicles, heavy equipment, materials, communication gear, and tools.
  • Ability to hear bells, whistles, and alarms is necessary.
  • Safety-approved body harnesses must be worn when working at 4 feet or above.
  • The role requires frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, climbing, and lifting.
  • Must be able to speak and listen effectively for communication.
  • Hands and arms will be used to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, controls, materials, and tools.
  • Must be capable of lifting, carrying, and moving items up to 25 lbs.
  • Good visual ability is needed for near and far focus, color recognition, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
