Role Summary

This position supports carpenters in carrying out journeyman-level work. The helper may help set out work, put components together, and contribute to more complex tasks while developing a solid understanding of basic mathematical concepts and how they apply to the trade. The role also requires the safe identification, handling, and use of hand tools, power tools, equipment, and related procedures.

Level IV workers are expected to handle journeyman-level carpenter tasks with little supervision.

Primary Duties

  • Build, fit, install, and take down formwork made from metal, wood, and related accessories.
  • Support the construction or reinforcement of forms and bracing before concrete pours.
  • Create frameworks for expansion joints and edges using edging tools, jointers, and straight edges.
  • Check structural accuracy with tools such as a transit, plumb bob, square, and level.
  • Use carpentry hand tools and equipment including hammers, levels, squares, screwdrivers, adjustable wrenches, hand and power saws, drill motors, and pry bars.
  • Smooth, level, and finish freshly placed concrete with a straightedge, float, or power screed.
  • Fasten cleats or braces across boards to form concrete-supporting structures.
  • Help prepare layouts for forms or fixtures using lines or grades.
  • Assist with assembling handrails, walkways, and gangways alongside formwork.
  • Mix cement or epoxy grout when needed using a concrete mixer or hoe.
  • Guide the concrete supplier to place the truck correctly for pouring.
  • Load, move, and unload tools, materials, and equipment.
  • Read drawings or diagrams and understand how they translate into solid structures.
  • Work to exacting standards and tight tolerances.
  • Operate electric and pneumatic tools.
  • Carry out minor maintenance and cleaning of tools and equipment.
  • Assist with tying rebar.
  • Follow company core values, principles, and code of conduct.
  • Carry out safety duties, including refusing unsafe work, following safety procedures, reporting incidents and hazards, wearing PPE, participating in inspections, attending training, and contributing to safety improvement efforts.
  • Join pre-start and safety meetings and participate actively.
  • Perform other related duties assigned by field supervision.

Qualifications and Experience Levels

Level IV candidates should have at least 36 months of heavy industrial carpenter experience, or other verified experience/certifications relevant to carpenter work.

Level III candidates should have 24 to 35 months of heavy industrial carpenter experience.

Level II candidates should have 12 to 23 months of heavy industrial carpenter experience.

Level I candidates should have 0 to 11 months of heavy industrial carpenter experience, plus 1 year of industrial experience.

Requirements

  • Personal hand tools must be available as listed on the industrial minimum tool list for the craft.
  • Completion of required safety training, including confined space, lockout/tagout, and working at heights.

Physical Demands

This role involves working outdoors in all weather conditions and in temperatures that can vary. The job may require work at different elevations and in windy, dusty, and noisy environments. The site may include a mix of light to heavy vehicles, equipment, materials, communications gear, and tools. The position also requires the ability to hear alarms and signals, wear a safety-approved harness when working at 4 feet or higher, and perform substantial standing, walking, bending, squatting, climbing, and lifting. The work involves using the arms and hands for signaling, gripping, holding, turning, pushing, and pulling.
