About This Role
We are seeking an Industry Officer to bring relevant industry expertise and computer proficiency to support operations at Loddon Prison and Middleton facilities under the Department of Justice and Community Safety.
This is a full time, ongoing position classified under Cog grade 2B with a salary range of $85,787 to $98,651 annually plus superannuation.
Business Unit Overview
Loddon Prison in Castlemaine is a 477-bed medium security facility housing sentenced male inmates, while adjacent Middleton is a 236-bed restricted minimum security prison. Both institutions emphasize rehabilitation via tailored case management, engagement in employment, education, training programs, and targeted interventions aimed at addressing offending behaviour while fostering prosocial development. They provide modern correctional services designed to prepare prisoners for their eventual transition back into the community.
Role Summary
Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Industry Officer enhances inmate reintegration by managing prisoner employment and coordinating integrated on-the-job training alongside educational and personal development programs. This role ensures adherence to safety protocols, prison industry procedures, the Industry Management Manual, and occupational health and safety standards. Responsibilities also include training, supervising inmates in commercial industries and services, conducting searches, escorts, surveillance, behavior assessments, operating security and industrial equipment, gathering information, and generating reports to support management in trend analysis and compliance monitoring.
The role demands leadership skills, sound judgement, confidence in decision-making, and capabilities to coach, mentor, and motivate prisoners. Strong communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, supervise and direct prisoners to maintain the prison's safety and order.
- Perform duties typically associated with a Senior Prison Officer as required.
- Develop and uphold safe work practices aligned with prison procedures, applicable standards, and legislation.
Candidate Profile
- Proficient computer skills with experience in the Department's software suite including Oracle, PIMS, JETS, Centurion, and Microsoft Office.
- Relevant industry experience and/or qualifications or recognized trade experience considered advantageous but not mandatory.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Trade qualifications or practical experience linked to the operations at Loddon Prison and Middleton industries are preferred but not compulsory.
- Successful completion or commitment to complete Prison Officer Pre-Service Training within 12 months of appointment.
- Holding a current High-Risk Forklift License is preferable but not essential.
