Job description

About the Role

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is a globally recognized private research university known for its innovation across science, technology, creative work, entrepreneurship, and hands-on learning. CMU-Africa is the university’s Africa-based presence in Kigali, Rwanda, where it delivers master’s programs with full-time faculty and staff and supports research and innovation relevant to the continent. The campus serves a growing student community drawn from more than 20 African countries and works closely with the Pittsburgh campus.

CMU-Africa is hiring an Impact Storytelling and Outreach Manager to support the Learning Science for Innovators (LSFI) team and its EdTech Hub partnerships. The position focuses on shaping and sharing the stories, outcomes, and experiences of stakeholders building education technology for African learning contexts. The role also supports the creation of strong learning experiences through multimedia and written content, and reports to the CMU-Africa Manager.

What You Will Do

  • Oversee the LSFI website, social media presence, project stories and blog content, along with related marketing and branding assets.
  • Work with EdTech Hubs to position LSFI offerings as meaningful support for building effective, culturally relevant learning tools in African education settings, including evidence-based reporting for participants and funders.
  • Coordinate publicity for events, learning sessions, meetups, and storytelling campaigns in collaboration with Hubs, Fellows, the Mastercard Foundation, and other project stakeholders.
  • Create polished branded videos, motion graphics, and interviews that communicate program impact and support marketing efforts.
  • Handle external messaging across project channels such as websites and LinkedIn, manage media relations, and draft newsletters, memos, and other communications in line with brand standards.
  • Design and execute outreach plans for timely, professional internal and external communication activities.
  • Partner with Learning Engineers to create and organize digital assets on request, including course visuals, audio, video, and podcasts, and secure media releases when required.
  • Ensure all materials meet accessibility standards and language localization needs.
  • Protect and strengthen the reputation of CMU, the project, and collaborating organizations by coordinating campaigns, reviewing marketing assets, and monitoring performance.
  • Assess campaign effectiveness and identify opportunities to improve outreach efforts.
  • Build reporting approaches to track outreach and narrative outcomes such as engagement, reach, and impressions.

Qualifications and Experience

CMU values adaptability, excellence, and a strong commitment to integrity. The university is looking for someone who can work effectively with diverse internal and external partners while supporting the mission of the institution.

  • A bachelor’s degree in writing, media production, advertising, marketing, journalism, education, or a closely related field.
  • A strong portfolio that shows culturally relevant writing and outreach work.
  • Hands-on media production capability, including film, motion graphics, and audio/video editing.
  • Graphic design experience with a strong grasp of color, typography, iconography, and information visualization.
  • Prior work in outreach and education within African contexts.
  • Experience collaborating on multicultural and multilingual teams.
  • Excellent English fluency, both written and spoken; knowledge of additional languages is an advantage.
  • Ability to use front-end technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, plus tools like Figma and Framer, is a plus.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience may also be considered.

Benefits and Additional Information

Eligible employees receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, prescription, dental, and vision coverage, employer-supported retirement savings, tuition benefits, paid time off, observed holidays, and life plus accidental death and disability insurance. Additional perks may include a free Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus pass, access to the Family Concierge Team for childcare support, fitness center access, and more.

CMU considers the full profile of each candidate, including credentials, experience, and the knowledge gained through education and training. The organization is committed to equal opportunity and does not discriminate on the basis of disability or veteran status.
