Job description

Role overview

The Emergency Department at Milton Keynes University Hospital is hiring six Healthcare Assistants to support care in a busy, high-acuity setting. The department treats patients with serious medical conditions, life-threatening illnesses or injuries, and limb-threatening emergencies, delivering round-the-clock care to around 240 patients each day. This role suits someone who is alert, proactive, caring, and able to work well in a fast-moving hospital environment.

This position is band 2/3 pro rata for part-time hours. The standard working pattern is 37.5 hours per week, and flexible working will be considered across the trust.

What the role involves

You will work alongside staff nurses, consultants, and ambulance personnel to support patient care and keep the department running safely and efficiently. The role calls for accurate record keeping, strong teamwork, and a genuine commitment to improving patient outcomes.

About the working environment

The Emergency Department requires people who can stay composed, think ahead, and respond quickly when priorities change. You will be expected to maintain high standards of safety, professionalism, and patient-focused care at all times.

Key duties

  • Help senior nursing colleagues maintain clinical equipment so it remains safe, functional, and ready for use.
  • Assist doctors and other staff during procedures and act as a chaperone when required.
  • Promote strong clinical practice and contribute to a culture of excellent patient care.
  • Take an active part in improvements that help create a better environment for patients and staff.
  • Support the induction and training of new team members.
  • Keep knowledge of the healthcare assistant role current through ongoing development.
  • Help use competency assessments in the practice area.
  • Assess junior healthcare assistants’ competency documents and Care Certificate progress.

Important conditions

Sponsorship is not available for this post.

To move to Band 3, you must already hold an NHS Care Certificate. Until that is completed, and probation has been passed, the role will remain at Band 2.

Values

The team works to the values: We care, We communicate, We collaborate, We contribute.
