Health and Safety Officer

Overview

This permanent, full-time role involves working 75 hours bi-weekly as part of the Yukon government’s commitment to an innovative, inclusive, and diverse public service focused on positive community outcomes.

Role Purpose

As a Health & Safety Officer, you will play a pivotal role in promoting employee well-being across territorial government departments. Acting as a trusted advisor and catalyst for change, you’ll provide hands-on guidance, foster strong partnerships, and assist teams in translating policy into effective action.

You will serve as a go-to resource for supervisors, safety professionals, and employees, leading initiatives on emerging workplace safety issues, including psychological health, violence prevention, and public health hazards. Your role will include directing communications efforts such as awareness campaigns and resource development to influence workplace behavior positively.

Working closely with Joint Health and Safety Committees and organizational leaders, you will contribute to cultivating a supportive, informed, and secure workplace culture.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in relevant disciplines such as occupational health and safety, human resources, health sciences, public administration, law, or trades.
• Proven experience offering consultative support and coaching to employers and workers to ensure adherence to legislation, policies, and best practices.
• Background in managing or participating in workplace safety programs, including hazard evaluations, inspections, audits, compliance checks, or safety committees.
• Experience developing written and digital communications, promotional content, or campaigns aimed at raising awareness and shaping behaviors.
• While not mandatory, certifications like CRSP, CSP, CRST, or CHSC are advantageous.

• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to craft clear and engaging materials such as guides, reports, or online content.
• Demonstrated interpersonal abilities to build relationships and convey complex safety information effectively to varied audiences.

Additional Information

• Applicants must provide a valid Class 5 driver’s license and certified copies of academic and professional credentials upon hiring.
• Willingness to travel as required by the role.
• The position’s eligibility list remains valid for 12 months.
