Role Overview

Reporting to the Director of Public Affairs, the Head of Media manages a dedicated team of media and event specialists, overseeing both proactive and reactive media interactions, with the objective of protecting and enhancing the department's public image. This role acts as the principal liaison for journalists, handling media inquiries comprehensively from research and coordination with internal experts to drafting responses and managing departmental approvals.

The position requires leading proactive media engagement by identifying and pitching positive stories that highlight Victoria's healthcare system, including domains such as public health, mental health, and aged care. Close collaboration with senior department executives and Ministerial offices ensures media communications are timely, factual, and clear.

This role also involves monitoring and managing media issues both proactively and reactively, providing expert media guidance to health services, and representing the Communications and Engagement Branch in emergencies or crisis situations. Leadership responsibilities include guiding team strategy, facilitating skill development, editing outputs, and supervising approvals under pressure.

Integration with senior leaders across the communications branch ensures alignment with broader strategies and narratives. The role requires participating in a rotating roster for the department’s 24/7 media hotline, necessitating flexible working hours that may include nights, early mornings, and weekends.
