General Duty Nurse (N2) - Surgery-D2 Orthopedic Trauma/Spine

About the Role

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA), under the umbrella of Shared Health, is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse for the GD2 Orthopedic Surgery unit at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This full-time role involves direct patient care for individuals with complex orthopedic trauma and spine conditions. The RN will play a pivotal role in delivering professional nursing services, managing prescribed medical treatments, and coordinating discharge and overall patient care within a dynamic healthcare team.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide autonomous and collaborative nursing services to patients with acute and complex needs in orthopedic trauma and surgical care.
• Administer medical treatments as prescribed and oversee patient progress.
• Take a leadership role within the care team to ensure coordinated and effective patient management.
• Support discharge planning and facilitate smooth transitions of care.
• Demonstrate commitment to the organizational vision, values, and objectives.

Qualifications and Experience

• Graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program is required.
• Completion of relevant post-basic nursing education may be necessary depending on the role.
• At least one year of experience in acute surgical or orthopedic nursing preferred, with current orthopedic trauma experience an asset.
• Valid registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) must be maintained throughout employment.
• Participation in professional associations such as the Association of Regulated Nurses of Manitoba (ARNM) is preferred.
• Current CPR certification as per employer requirements.

Knowledge and Skills

• In-depth understanding of nursing standards, ethics, scopes of practice, and relevant provincial legislation including PHIA, RHPA, and WHMIS.
• Familiarity with policies and procedures at regional, facility, and unit levels in nursing care.
• Ability to apply principles of delegation and teamwork within multidisciplinary settings.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities with the ability to prioritize care and handle multiple competing demands.
• Capacity to adapt quickly to fluctuating work environments and maintain focus amidst interruptions.
• Preference given to candidates with proficiency in Indigenous languages and awareness of Indigenous cultural customs, traditions, and values.
• Competence with computer applications including Windows OS, word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.

Physical and Working Conditions

This role involves moderate to heavy physical exertion and requires working in a fast-paced, high-pressure healthcare environment. The anticipated schedule includes shifts during days, nights, and weekends, with average daily hours of approximately 11.63 and annual base hours totaling 2015.
