Job description

Overview

This is a funded six-month traineeship commencing around May 2026 at the EU Delegation to Australia, located in Canberra. It offers young graduates an opportunity to gain practical insights into the diplomatic work of the EU Delegation, specifically within the Trade Section, which manages bilateral EU-Australia trade and investment relations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Trade Section’s daily operations under the Head of Section’s guidance.
  • Collect and analyze data on economic and legal aspects influencing bilateral trade and investments.
  • Monitor and report on policy developments related to trade and economics in Australia.
  • Organize stakeholder engagement events and outreach activities.
  • Take part in meetings with Australian government officials, EU Member States representatives, industry stakeholders, and prepare meeting reports.
  • Assist in identifying and addressing market access issues and trade barriers.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, with strong drafting skills.
  • Basic understanding of the European Union’s operations.
  • Good IT skills.
  • Interest and knowledge in trade-related topics is advantageous.
  • Preferred: Master’s degree in economics, law, political science, or international relations.
  • Additional advantage: Coursework or module on trade policy.
  • Applicants must have fewer than 12 months of professional experience following graduation by the traineeship agreement signing date (experience such as internships or volunteering during or after studies is excluded).

Additional Information

  • The traineeship must comply with local and origin country legislation.
  • EU citizens must provide proof of pandemic coverage and repatriation costs, and possess appropriate visas or residence permits depending on duration and regulations.
