About the Role
The European Union Delegation in Wellington, New Zealand, invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term Policy Officer position within its Trade Section. This role is intended to cover maternity leave from 14 September 2026 to 14 March 2027, with a potential extension of up to six months pending budget availability. The successful candidate will provide expert advice on economic, trade, and investment matters relevant to EU-New Zealand relations, with special emphasis on the implementation of the EU-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Working closely under the Head of Trade Section, the officer will engage with various stakeholders, monitor trade developments, and contribute to bilateral engagements.
Key Responsibilities
- Regularly monitor and report to headquarters on economic, trade, investment, and sustainability issues relevant to EU policies.
- Provide early warning on potential trade disputes, focusing on market access and other trade barriers.
- Draft briefs, speeches, press releases, and articles related to trade matters upon request.
- Engage with New Zealand government ministries, professional organizations, private sector representatives, and other local stakeholders to facilitate EU trade policy implementation.
- Represent and communicate EU trade policies to diverse audiences including local authorities, civil society, and business communities.
- Participate in conferences, meetings, and public events relevant to trade affairs.
- Monitor ongoing and prospective bilateral, regional, and multilateral trade negotiations and regional integration affecting New Zealand and the EU.
- Assist in planning and supporting delegation missions and contribute to reports and event coordination.
- Undertake additional duties as required by the Trade Section or Delegation priorities.
Candidate Profile
- Strong understanding of New Zealand’s political and policy landscape.
- Extensive knowledge of EU trade and investment policies, including business and industry cooperation programs.
- Ability to cultivate professional networks with government officials and stakeholders.
- Excellent communication, drafting, and presentation skills with the ability to prioritize and work under pressure.
- Proven teamwork capabilities and flexibility to occasionally work outside standard office hours due to time zone differences.
Eligibility and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in trade, economics, international relations, law, or related fields.
- At least two years of relevant professional experience.
- High proficiency in English (C1 level).
- Proficient with common IT tools including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Webex, and Zoom.
- New Zealand citizenship or residency; must currently reside in New Zealand.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with government institutions and external stakeholders.
- Background in multinational environments such as embassies, foreign companies, or international organizations.
- Experience related to EU affairs, trade, investment, or sustainability issues.
- Knowledge of additional European languages or Māori language is advantageous.
Remuneration and Benefits
The starting salary typically begins at NZD 9042 monthly, dependent on verified employment experience, plus a 6% employer KiwiSaver contribution. The position includes a competitive benefits package comprising personal leave and public holidays. The role is subject to a 3-week probation period.
