Job description
Role overview
The ESH Specialist will support a designated program area by monitoring site conditions, giving technical guidance, and helping ensure operations meet applicable federal, state, and local rules. The role includes evaluating work locations for compliance gaps, assisting supervisors and managers with corrective actions, carrying out observations and program reviews, and performing root cause analysis. The specialist will also create and deliver training materials, use monitoring instruments, conduct specialized tests for physical, chemical, and environmental stress factors, prepare technical documentation, and work closely with mid-level management.
Key responsibilities
- Support the rollout and maintenance of a structured ESH management-system-based program.
- Assess risk, build programs that go beyond minimum regulatory requirements, and identify resources needed, including PPE and related budget needs.
- Determine training needs across operations, prepare and deliver training, and document all training activity.
- Complete ESH inspections, compile monthly performance data, and help run employee recognition initiatives.
- Review compliance obligations and submit documentation required for permits such as air, hazardous waste, and water.
- Work directly with senior leaders, area supervisors, and regulators using a hands-on, floor-level communication style to drive ESH implementation.
- Manage hazardous materials and hazardous waste controls within industrial environments.
- Act as a role model by consistently following all environmental, safety, and health rules, procedures, and standards while keeping the work area and equipment clean and organized.
- Carry out additional tasks and assignments as needed.
Qualifications and experience
This role may allow one year of relevant experience to replace one year of education where a degree is required. A high school/GED background with at least 3 years of experience in complex tasks is mentioned, along with an associate degree in environmental, safety, health, or a related field, or an equivalent mix of higher education and 2 years of experience.
Applicants should have at least 2 years of experience as an environmental, safety, and health specialist, with practical knowledge of behavior-based safety compliance programs, hazardous materials management, and environmental compliance. Familiarity with DoD, Army, EPA, and other federal requirements is expected. Military experience and training are considered an advantage.
Tools and working conditions
The job requires the ability to teach small and medium-sized groups and to work confidently with Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The environment may involve extreme heat above 100 degrees for more than one hour, significant noise, vibration, physical hazards such as moving machinery, vehicles, electricity, scaffolding, high places, high heat, and chemical exposure, as well as atmospheric exposure including fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
Equal opportunity statement
The employer states a commitment to equal employment opportunity and protects veterans and individuals with disabilities. The workplace is described as inclusive and diverse, with an emphasis on fairness, respect, dignity, integrity, responsibility, and respect for varied backgrounds and perspectives.
