Job Summary
The Environmental Service Worker I plays a key role in keeping the facility clean, safe, and hospitable. The position covers routine cleaning, floor upkeep, and waste handling in assigned spaces while following hygiene, safety, infection-control, and regulatory requirements. By maintaining a well-kept environment, this role supports the comfort and safety of patients, employees, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Clean and disinfect assigned areas such as patient rooms, corridors, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, elevators, stairwells, locker rooms, and other workspaces in line with infection prevention standards.
- Carry out floor and surface care duties, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, stripping, refinishing, and treating hard floors and carpeted surfaces, as well as upholstery, according to department procedures.
- Wash walls, ceilings, windows, woodwork, doors, and other surfaces to support a sanitary environment.
- Replenish supplies in assigned locations, keep an eye on stock levels, and flag shortages when needed.
- Collect, move, and dispose of trash and biohazardous waste safely while following safety rules and HIPAA-related handling protocols.
- Use cleaning equipment properly, maintain it in working order, and report any defects or repair needs.
- Help with small repair or maintenance tasks and escalate larger facility issues to the right team.
- Take on additional duties as assigned, while maintaining dependable and regular attendance and following all organizational policies and standards.
Qualifications
- Previous experience of 1 to 2 years in cleaning or environmental services is preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Working knowledge of cleaning methods, tools, and products
- Understanding of infection-control and workplace safety practices
- Ability to use cleaning equipment safely and effectively
- Strong attention to detail and solid time management
- Good communication and interpersonal skills for working with staff, patients, and visitors
- Physical capability to repeat tasks and move or lift items as required
State-Specific Requirements
Some locations have additional onboarding requirements: Indiana roles at IN Lutheran Hospital require completion of the assigned SAMA course within 30 days of hire. Mississippi roles and North Carolina roles also require completion of the assigned SAMA course within 30 days of hire.
