About the Role
The Environmental, Health & Safety Officer at Walsh Waste & Recycling is tasked with guaranteeing full adherence to all pertinent health, safety, environmental, and waste-management regulations. This role leads the enhancement of the company's safety culture, environmental compliance programs, risk management efforts, and employee engagement to foster a secure, sustainable, and legally compliant work environment.
Serving as the in-house expert on EHS topics, the officer collaborates closely with management, operational teams, drivers, workshop staff, and regulatory bodies.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and continuously advance the Health & Safety Management System in accordance with ISO 45001 standards.
- Foster a proactive and positive safety culture throughout all business units.
- Ensure strict compliance with all relevant health, safety, environmental, and waste management legislation.
- Carry out audits, inspections, risk evaluations, and compliance assessments regularly.
- Create and maintain safe operating procedures, including Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Lead thorough investigations into workplace accidents, incidents, near misses, and environmental issues, identifying root causes and applying corrective and preventive measures.
- Track safety performance metrics and initiate continuous improvement initiatives.
- Oversee and improve the Environmental Management System following ISO 14001 criteria.
- Manage environmental compliance across all waste collection, transport, processing, and recycling activities.
- Ensure adherence to permits, licenses, and environmental monitoring obligations of the company.
- Promote sustainability and environmental awareness initiatives within the company.
- Design and administer comprehensive EHS training programs, including manual handling instruction, employee inductions, and toolbox meetings.
- Support managers and staff to uphold safe work practices throughout the company.
- Serve as the primary contact for regulatory agencies, auditors, and external service providers.
- Assist with fleet safety protocols, contractor oversight, and operational compliance tasks.
- Help manage the waste facility operations and address customer compliance questions.
- Maintain and audit key EHS records, documentation, and reporting systems.
