About the Position
The Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada is in search of capable applicants for the role of District/Family Courtroom Clerk I/II. This vital position is responsible for managing all case files, documentation, and involved participants to ensure smooth and efficient courtroom proceedings in District and Family courts. The role acts as a key communication link between the court and those participating in hearings, maintaining detailed audio, video, and written records of court activities and related follow-ups.
Candidates must have the ability to comprehend and execute both oral and written directions, independently draft correspondence, minute orders, and other related documents based on brief instructions. Organizing case and office records with precision, prioritizing workload effectively, and meeting strict deadlines are essential. The role demands effective teamwork skills and the capacity to establish professional interactions with a variety of individuals from diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
Position Levels and Salary
There are two levels within this classification: Courtroom Clerk I and Courtroom Clerk II. The Clerk I position starts at $24.79 per hour as a training underfill, with promotion to Clerk II upon successful completion of training. The Clerk II role is a fully qualified position with a pay rate of $26.70 per hour and includes responsibilities such as regular interaction with court officials, attorneys, and the public, while applying courtroom rules and procedures tactfully and judiciously.
Employment Conditions
This recruitment is limited to the first 150 applications and may close once this threshold is reached. Employment may fill full-time or limited-permanent roles linked to special projects with specified durations. Some positions may be grant-funded and contingent on funding availability, resulting in termination without appeal if funding ceases. Certain roles could be confidential and are non-union.
Minimum Qualifications
- For Courtroom Clerk I: High school diploma or equivalent with two years of full-time clerical experience, including one year within a legal or court environment. Equivalent professional experience and/or education may substitute equally.
- Typing proficiency at a net 50 words per minute and verified shorthand/speedwriting certification capable of taking dictation at 70 net words per minute and producing accurate transcripts are required. New hires not holding certification must obtain it within 12 months.
- For Courtroom Clerk II: In addition to Clerk I requirements, at least one year of full-time experience independently supporting courtroom functions in District or Family Court is necessary. Certifications in typing and shorthand/speedwriting must be valid at the time of application.
Working Environment and Additional Conditions
- Requires exposure to individuals who may be difficult or potentially hazardous and handling evidence materials.
- May involve extended shifts or emergency callbacks.
- Employment depends on the successful completion of background checks and pre-employment drug testing.

Examples of Job Duties
- Organize and distribute court calendars, ensuring all relevant files, documents, and evidence are prepared for court sessions.
- Notify court officials and participants about cases under consideration and administer oaths for juries and witnesses.
- Maintain accurate audio, video, and manual records of court activities including minute orders summarizing proceedings.
- Check legal orders and documents for accuracy and compliance, managing a tracking system for these records.
- Secure evidence, files, and materials, marking exhibits as required; schedule hearings mindful of deadlines and participant availability.
- Respond to inquiries with factual information about court proceedings for attorneys, officials, staff, and the public.
- Liaise with attorneys to manage appointments and ensure notifications.
- Compose various correspondence and documentation from brief instructions, using typing or word processing tools.
- Contribute suggestions and collaborate with team members to improve unit efficiency.
- Train and direct others regarding courtroom procedures when needed.
- Maintain precise records and prepare reports related to assigned work.
- Utilize standard office equipment including computers daily.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in an office setting using standard equipment.
- Capable of lifting files up to 30 pounds and pushing/pulling carts up to 50 pounds.
- Visual acuity to review printed and screen materials and sufficient hearing and speech for communications.
