About the Role
The Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada is inviting qualified individuals to apply for the Deputy Marshal I position as part of the upcoming academy scheduled for February 2027. This recruitment targets entry-level candidates aspiring to establish a long-term law enforcement career within the District Court system. The Deputy Marshal is responsible for protecting the court, personnel, and public, supporting court operations, and contributing to the criminal justice system. Duties include maintaining security and order in courtrooms and public spaces while court is in session or open to the public.
Appointment and Employment Terms
Appointments may be limited-term for special projects with exact employment periods defined by a term letter. Grant-funded roles depend on funding availability and may result in termination without appeal if funding ceases. The position is non-union and excluded from union membership. Successful completion of probation (520 to 2,080 hours worked) and a two-year training program leads to non-competitive promotion to Deputy Marshal II.
Minimum Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to pass P.O.S.T. pre-agility fitness standards (NAC 289.205).
- A valid Nevada Class C Driver’s License may be required for certain positions.
- Meet criteria specified under NAC 289.110.
- Must be 21 years or older at the time of appointment.
Examination Process
Candidates meeting minimum criteria will be contacted by email about subsequent hiring steps. The process involves multiple phases, including:
- The P.O.S.T Physical Readiness Test (PPRT) comprising six sequential events:
- Vertical Jump (minimum 14 inches)
- Agility Run (within 19.5 seconds)
- At least 30 sit-ups in 1 minute
- Minimum 23 push-ups (no time limit)
- 300 meter sprint (within 68 seconds)
- 1.5 mile walk or run (within 16 minutes and 57 seconds)
- Upcoming PPRT dates: August 14 and 15, 2026, at 7:00 am (subject to change).
- Candidates who pass the PPRT advance to a final interview stage.
Educational Experience and Licensing
- Deputy Marshal I requires high school equivalency and valid Nevada P.O.S.T. Category II or higher certification, or acceptance into an accredited P.O.S.T. Category II or higher law enforcement academy.
- Two years of experience as a Bailiff, Deputy Marshal or similar or sworn law enforcement officer required for Deputy Marshal II.
- Must wear court uniform, carry firearm and chemical agents while on duty; must maintain weapons proficiency and required certifications.
- Applicants certified outside Nevada must provide documentation meeting Nevada P.O.S.T standards and complete Nevada Category I training within 18 months of hiring.
Additional Requirements and Conditions
- Background checks according to Nevada Administrative Code 289.110 are mandatory before and periodically after hiring.
- Employment contingent on a satisfactory medical exam and pre-employment drug test.
- Must meet citizenship requirements.
Typical Duties
- Respond promptly to emergencies including disturbances, assaults, medical crises, applying appropriate force and coordinating with emergency services.
- Ensure courtroom and jury security throughout trials including high-risk proceedings, enforcing court orders, transporting detainees, and maintaining peace.
- Maintain decorum by separating involved parties and escorting to avoid conflict.
- Serve as liaison among judges, attorneys, staff, and the public for orderly court operations.
- Conduct patrols around court facilities to prevent crime; investigate suspicious events, detain suspects, interview victims, collect evidence, and prepare necessary legal documents.
- Effect arrest and detention under court authority, manage confrontations, address mental health crises, and engage with individuals under influence of substances.
- Perform security screening at entrances to prevent unauthorized weapons and contraband, search persons and property, and prepare courtrooms for sessions.
- Securely transport detainees between holding areas and courtrooms.
- Document incidents thoroughly and testify in court as required.
- Participate in firearms qualification, defensive tactics training, and other mandated law enforcement instruction.
- May conduct explosive detection with trained canine and execute warrants as assigned.
- May interact with media during high-profile cases and assist with courtroom equipment and administrative tasks.
Physical Requirements
Must have mobility to operate within court/offices and handle standard equipment, be able to lift up to 50 pounds, have good vision and hearing to communicate effectively, and possess physical strength to restrain or remove individuals in challenging situations.
