Job description

About the Role

The Eighth Judicial District Court of Nevada is looking to fill a full-time Commissioner position dedicated to the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Discovery department. This role supports the court’s mission by facilitating non-traditional, cost-effective civil dispute resolution methods and addressing pre-trial discovery issues in civil cases. Depending on operational needs, this Commissioner may also assist other court departments including Child Support, Juvenile Delinquency and Dependency, Guardianship, Probate, and Civil Commitment matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts hearings pursuant to Nevada Revised Statutes and issues subpoenas to ensure witness attendance.
  • Evaluates and admits evidence, hears arguments, and renders findings of fact and conclusions of law.
  • Prepares legal recommendations and communicates with District Court judges on case issues.
  • Provides guidance to attorneys and parties via multiple communication channels.
  • Assists with legislative drafting and conducts legal research related to proposed laws.
  • Delivers presentations to professional, educational, and community groups about judicial functions.
  • Collaborates with other County departments to streamline judicial processes.
  • Manages and supervises support staff, including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, and disciplinary actions.
  • Contributes to team efficiency by offering insights and active participation in workgroups.
  • Utilizes standard office equipment and computer applications effectively within a courtroom or office setting.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Possession of a Nevada State Bar admission certificate and eligibility to practice law in Nevada.
  • Minimum of five years practicing as an attorney within Nevada.
  • Must maintain active and good standing membership with the Nevada State Bar.
  • Candidates should possess a deep understanding of federal, state, and local laws, judicial procedures, rules of evidence, and legal research methods.
  • Knowledge of employee supervision principles including work planning and evaluation is essential.
  • Effective communication skills, including business English proficiency and ability to interact amicably with diverse populations, are required.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful background investigation and pre-employment drug testing.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorships or transfers are not provided.
  • Candidates are prohibited from engaging in private practice of law while employed.

Physical & Work Environment

The role involves working in a typical office or court environment with mobility sufficient to operate standard office equipment and communicate effectively in person and via telephone. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals who request them.
