Job description

Position Overview

We invite applications for a dedicated and proactive Legal and Research Counsel to join our team in Auckland. This fixed term appointment runs until the end of January 2027 and involves delivering prompt, comprehensive, and accurate legal assistance to New Zealand's Coroners and the Coroners Court.

Key Responsibilities

  • Drafting initial versions of Coroners' findings under the guidance of Coroners and the team manager.
  • Conducting thorough legal research upon requests from the Chief Coroner or other Coroners.
  • Possibly representing or supporting representation in Coroners Court proceedings, necessitating a valid practicing certificate.
  • Supporting legislative and coronial/medical law analysis.

Candidate Profile

  • Possesses a Bachelor of Laws degree (essential).
  • Demonstrates strong skills in legal drafting and research; prior drafting experience is beneficial.
  • Exhibits high precision with spelling, grammar, and detail orientation.
  • Has at least 1-2 years post-qualification experience.
  • Excels in interpersonal communication.
  • Is skilled at managing time effectively and meeting legal deadlines autonomously.
  • Understands Te Ao Māori, including Te Reo Māori and tikanga Māori.
  • Maintains resilience and sensitivity when handling challenging and traumatic content.

While candidates may not fulfill every criterion, possession of a law degree and eligibility for a practicing certificate are mandatory.

Terms and Salary

The annual salary range for this position is from $74,634 to $95,591 pro rata, with appointments typically between $82,694 and $87,531 pro rata, dependent on experience and qualifications.
