Position Overview

AOSSM seeks a Director of Marketing and Membership to join its professional leadership team. This senior role involves shaping and executing integrated strategies in marketing, branding, communications, and membership development. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director acts as a strategic partner ensuring alignment with the organization’s goals while enhancing member engagement, brand strength, program participation, fundraising efforts, and long-term growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the creation and implementation of a cohesive annual marketing and membership plan tied to the Society’s strategic objectives.
  • Advise the CEO and senior leadership on marketing and membership-related initiatives.
  • Manage budgeting, resource allocation, and priority setting for marketing activities.
  • Guide branding efforts to maintain consistency across all communications including meetings, research publications, advocacy, philanthropy, and educational programs.
  • Lead recruitment, retention, onboarding, renewal, engagement, and win-back campaigns leveraging precise audience segmentation.
  • Monitor membership revenue, set annual dues goals, and forecast renewal and recruitment trends.
  • Collaborate with volunteers and committees to identify member needs and growth opportunities.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to enhance program participation and sponsorship campaigns.
  • Utilize marketing technologies, optimize CRM systems, apply automation, analytics, and AI tools to improve organizational performance.
  • Set departmental KPIs and provide executive-level dashboards for performance tracking.
  • Recruit, mentor, and coach the marketing and membership team fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and innovation.
  • Travel about 10–15% annually for key meetings including the AOSSM Annual Meeting and Board sessions.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
  • At least 8–10 years of progressive experience in marketing leadership roles.
  • Proven success in designing and executing integrated marketing strategies and managing cross-functional teams.
  • Experience with membership organizations, healthcare, or nonprofit sectors advantageous.
  • Expertise with digital marketing platforms, CRM/AMS, marketing automation, data analytics, AI applications, and project management.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with strong presentation abilities.
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Executive presence, comfortable interacting with Boards, volunteer leaders, and senior executives.
