Job overview
The custodian is in charge of keeping assigned spaces clean, sanitary, and orderly. This role supports day-to-day facility upkeep through routine janitorial work, safe handling of hazardous waste, and the use of cleaning equipment and approved procedures.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out routine janitorial tasks across assigned areas.
- Complete all duties listed on the daily work schedule.
- Handle hazardous-waste tasks, including collection, sorting, classification, storage, shipping, receiving, labeling, cleaning, recycling, and packaging of special and hazardous materials.
- Use motorized cleaning equipment as needed.
- Keep the assigned work area maintained and tidy each day.
- Promptly report unsafe conditions and incidents to the supervisor.
- Follow safety rules, policies, and operating procedures at all times.
- Intervene when unsafe behavior is observed in oneself or others.
- Work collaboratively with other team members to complete assignments.
- Perform repetitive duties consistently and accurately.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Follow company protocols, procedures, policies, and rules.
- Accept direction and respond appropriately to supervision.
- Communicate professionally with leads, supervisors, coworkers, managers, and customers.
- Step in to help during staff shortages.
- Assist the shift lead with punch-list completion.
- Use the required personal protective equipment correctly.
- Maintain a professional appearance and manner at all times.
- Understand the importance of customer service and customer satisfaction.
- Be familiar with reporting systems and environmental-related requirements.
Qualifications and skills
- No formal education is required.
- Three to six months of related training or experience is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A valid driver’s license may be required.
- Completion of all required safety and task training certifications is expected.
- Forklift certification may be required.
- Ability to read and understand instructions, procedures, manuals, and similar documents.
- Strong spoken and written communication skills.
- Working knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment, with a willingness to share that knowledge with the team.
- Understanding of how to maintain and care for cleaning equipment.
- Knowledge of cleaning compounds and chemicals and their safe, efficient use.
- Bilingual ability is an added advantage.
Physical requirements and work setting
This position involves physical activity and may require the employee to sit and speak or listen frequently while on duty. The role also requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be available for qualified individuals with disabilities.
Schedule and pay
The work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. Pay is listed at $13.00 to $14.00 per hour.
