Job overview
This role is centered on keeping assigned spaces clean, sanitary, and well maintained. The custodian is expected to carry out routine janitorial work, support safe waste handling, use cleaning equipment properly, and follow site procedures throughout the shift.
Key responsibilities
- Carry out general janitorial and cleaning tasks.
- Complete the duties outlined in the daily work schedule.
- Handle hazardous and special waste by collecting, sorting, classifying, storing, labeling, cleaning, packaging, shipping, and receiving as required.
- Use motorized cleaning machines and maintain assigned areas each day.
- Report unsafe situations, incidents, and hazardous conditions to the supervisor promptly.
- Follow safety rules, site policies, and operational procedures at all times.
- Intervene when unsafe behavior is observed, including your own and that of others.
- Work cooperatively with team members and complete repetitive tasks as part of the role.
- Keep the work area tidy and support the shift lead with punch-list items when needed.
- Fill in for staffing gaps during shortages.
- Take direction well and respond appropriately to supervision.
- Communicate professionally with leads, supervisors, coworkers, managers, and customers.
- Wear the proper personal protective equipment and maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
- Understand the basics of customer service, satisfaction, reporting systems, and environmental responsibilities.
Qualifications
No specific academic background is required. A candidate with 3 to 6 months of relevant training or hands-on experience is preferred, and an equivalent mix of education and experience may also be considered.
A valid driver’s license may be needed. Completion of safety and task training certifications is required, and forklift certification may also be necessary.

- Working knowledge of cleaning methods, tools, and equipment.
- Ability to care for and maintain cleaning equipment.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safe handling practices.

- Bilingual ability is an advantage.
Physical requirements and work environment
This job can involve frequent sitting as well as talking and listening. The role also requires the ability to lift and move up to 35 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be available for individuals with disabilities.
No supervisory duties are attached to this position.
Compensation and schedule
Custodial Lead: CAD 20 to CAD 21 per hour, Sunday through Thursday, 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM.
Custodian: CAD 17 to CAD 18 per hour, with the following shift options: Tuesday through Saturday, 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM; Sunday through Thursday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM; or Tuesday through Saturday, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
