Job description

Job overview

This role focuses on delivering nutrition-focused education that helps improve healthy habits among rural communities. The educator will work with partner organizations to carry out learning activities and health interventions.

Work location

MDH - Somerset County Health Department, 8928 Sign Post Road, Westover, MD 21871.

Role purpose

The main objective of this position is to support healthier behaviors through targeted nutrition education and coordinated outreach with community partners.

Minimum education and experience

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health Education, Community Health Education, or Health Science is required. No prior experience is necessary.

Substitution options

  • A bachelor’s degree may be replaced by at least 18 credit hours in Public Health Education, Community Health Education, Health Science, or a related behavioral science field, along with 1 year of experience planning, developing, implementing, and promoting health education projects.
  • Relevant U.S. Armed Forces commissioned officer service in Health Educator and Community Health roles, or in Health Educator and Community Health specialty codes within public health, may be accepted year-for-year in place of the required education.

Preferred background

  • Working knowledge of diabetes and other chronic illnesses
  • Comfort with public speaking and group presentation
  • Awareness of social determinants that affect health outcomes
  • Familiarity with Somerset County
  • Bilingual communication ability

Licensing and vehicle requirement

This classification may involve driving duties. If assigned, the employee must hold a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license.

Selection process

Eligible applicants will be reviewed based on how well their education, training, and experience match the position. Applicants should provide complete and accurate details, including education, job history, dates, and hours worked. Degree and major information must be clearly listed when applicable. For education completed outside the United States, any offer will depend on a foreign credential equivalency evaluation before employment begins, and it may be requested before interview.

Names may remain on the certified eligible list for at least one year, and that list may be used to fill similar vacancies in this or other state agencies.
