Job description
About the organisation
The Vale of Glamorgan Council delivers cleaning services for building cleaning clients. The organisation describes itself through four values: ambitious, open, together and proud. It aims to keep improving the way it works, remain open to new ideas, work collaboratively with customers and partners, respect diversity, and provide high-quality services. These values are also presented in Welsh.
About the role
This position is based at Whitmore High School in Barry, Wales. It is a Monday-to-Friday role with 24 hours per week during term time across 38 weeks, and 24 hours per week during recess across 5 weeks. The pay is Grade 1, SP3, with an annual pro rata salary of £25,949 and an hourly rate of £13.45.
The post holder will support the delivery of an effective cleaning service for building cleaning clients. The role also involves stepping in for colleagues during holidays, sickness, staffing shortfalls and other absences. At times, the cleaner may assist the chargehand or site supervisor with training other cleaning staff.
Key duties
- Help maintain a reliable and effective cleaning service for premises cleaning clients.
- Provide cover for other cleaners when they are away due to leave, illness, reduced staffing or similar reasons.
- Support the chargehand or site supervisor occasionally with training new or existing cleaning staff.
- Carry out a wide range of cleaning work, including carpet cleaning, steam cleaning, site-specification cleaning, builders’ cleans, recess cleaning and other tasks not usually listed in the site specification.
What you need
Applicants should have previous experience in the cleaning sector or in a related cleaning environment. A basic understanding of the range of tasks needed to deliver an efficient and effective premises cleaning service is also required. The role calls for strong verbal communication skills, including the ability to speak with members of the public and client officers.
You must be physically capable of manual and active labour duties, able to work independently and complete work effectively without close supervision. A positive, self-driven attitude is important, along with flexibility and responsiveness to changing priorities and demands. The job may involve irregular hours, and you should be willing to travel or drive across the Vale or between locations as needed.
