Job description
Position Summary
The City of Wilmer is looking for a seasoned, highly organized, and service-oriented City Secretary to join the city’s leadership group. This role offers professional administrative assistance to the Mayor, City Council, and City Administrator, with a strong focus on meeting legal and procedural requirements under the Texas Open Meetings Act, Public Information Act, records retention rules, and other relevant laws.
Key Duties
- Draft and distribute City Council agendas, meeting packets, notices, and minutes.
- Keep custody of official city documents, including ordinances, resolutions, and contracts.
- Support adherence to the Texas Open Meetings Act and Public Information Act.
- Handle records retention responsibilities and manage public information requests.
- Assist with municipal elections and appointments to boards and commissions.
- Administer oaths of office and preserve official records.
- Provide day-to-day administrative support to the Mayor, City Council, and City Administrator.
- Interact courteously and professionally with residents, elected officials, and staff members.
- Take on additional duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED is required; an associate’s or bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- At least 3 years of increasingly responsible administrative experience is required.
- Background in municipal government is preferred.
- Strong written and spoken communication abilities are essential.
- Good organizational ability and computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office, are required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior work experience with a Texas city or municipality is preferred.
- Holding a Texas Registered Municipal Clerk (TRMC) or Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) credential is preferred, or the ability to earn one.
- Familiarity with agenda preparation and records management systems is preferred.
