Job description
Role overview
This position is for a Band 5 Staff Nurse or ODP to join Tower and Nuffield theatres, covering recovery, scrub, admissions, ambulatory care and discharge lounge areas. The role involves assessing perioperative care needs, creating care plans, delivering care, and reviewing outcomes with a high level of autonomy and without direct supervision.
The successful post holder will also take responsibility for supporting junior colleagues and students from time to time, and will contribute to the ongoing development of theatre practice. The role requires independent working, professional accountability, and a strong commitment to patient safety, dignity, human rights, and person-centred care.
Key duties
- Receive and admit surgical patients.
- Work as scrub and circulating staff in operating theatres.
- Provide post-operative recovery care.
- Take part in an internal rotation programme to support multi-skilled working across the unit.
- Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team in ambulatory care and post-operative lounge settings.
- Help organise theatre lists and day-to-day departmental tasks.
- Support Trust initiatives, quality improvement activity, and audit work.
- Identify and avoid circumstances that could negatively affect patient health or wellbeing.
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments to determine patient needs.
- Ensure discharge planning is safe and appropriate for each patient.
- Carry out nursing procedures and treatments while maintaining high standards of care.
- Collect accurate patient histories, complete clear documentation, and keep information systems up to date.
- Carry out prescribed observations including blood pressure, temperature, respiration, blood glucose, urinalysis, weight, and height, and escalate any exceptions appropriately.
- Administer prescribed medicines safely, including blood and blood product transfusions.
