Job description
Role Overview
In this position, you will head a team responsible for planning, aligning and delivering public and digital communication efforts that reinforce MINDEF/SAF’s corporate reputation and sustain public confidence in national defence, National Service, and the Singapore Armed Forces.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and roll out communication plans that support organisational goals.
- Oversee engagement with local and overseas media outlets.
- Manage communication responses during crises and incidents.
- Use both traditional media and social media channels to amplify messaging.
- Help build favourable perceptions among priority stakeholder groups.
- Act as a representative for MINDEF/SAF in media-facing interactions.
- Serve in a Service Account Manager capacity.
- Arrange and coordinate publicity activities and communications events.
Challenges in the Role
- Making sure communication decisions remain sensitive to policy while still supporting operational needs.
- Working with multiple stakeholders to deliver outcomes that meet the organisation’s aims.
- Staying composed and flexible when handling major incidents.
- Adapting quickly to the fast-moving media environment with short turnaround times.
- Developing and sustaining productive relationships with media partners.
- Being prepared to work outside regular hours and travel overseas at short notice.
Requirements
- A background in Communication Studies, Political Science, or the Social Sciences.
- Minimum 6 years of experience in journalism, media, public relations, or corporate communications.
- Excellent written and spoken English.
- Knowledge of a second language such as Mandarin, Malay, or Tamil is an advantage.
- Strong people skills and clear communication ability.
- Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Comfort working independently with minimal supervision.
- A working style that is assertive, careful, and highly detail-focused.
- Strong interest in Singapore’s media environment and developments in politics, defence, and security.
- Good understanding of how Singapore’s media ecosystem works.
- Willingness to work irregular hours and travel overseas on short notice when required.
