About the Role
The Assistant Director of Prospect Research and Identification is a pivotal member of the OHSU Foundation's team, instrumental in advancing fundraising efforts. This temporary position, lasting from September 2026 through February 2027, offers remote or hybrid work arrangements. The role focuses on discovering and evaluating potential donors to enhance philanthropic support for OHSU.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with development officers as a strategic advisor to identify promising new prospects aligned with fundraising goals and emerging priorities.
- Formulate approaches to refresh and expand the pool of prospective donors, tracking progress through individual and team-focused queues.
- Continuously scan diverse sources such as websites, news publications, donor lists, and wealth screening outputs to gather new prospect leads.
- Qualify and prioritize potential major and principal gift donors through comprehensive analysis using multiple research tools, considering factors like capacity, interest, and timing.
- Analyze patterns and trends in donor data to inform effective fundraising tactics and prospect development.
- Partner with development officers to understand their information needs and customize research support according to the prospects' stage in cultivation.
- Perform detailed research on prospects and donors including financials, philanthropic passions, affiliations, and links to OHSU, utilizing internal records and paid and public databases.
- Create and update comprehensive profiles for individuals and organizations to support fundraising leadership, university partners, faculty, and staff.
- Manage research projects and requests to deliver timely, precise intelligence across Foundation teams.
Candidate Profile
- Demonstrated understanding of development, major gifts fundraising, and how targeted prospect research accelerates these efforts.
- Advanced ability using online references, data screening, foundation financial data, and regulatory filings such as SEC data.
- Experience employing diverse data analysis techniques including mining, segmentation, and analytics.
- Strong interpersonal and cultural competency skills to work collaboratively and diplomatically across diverse groups.
Qualifications
- Required: 5 to 7 years of experience in development research or similar roles, ideally within healthcare, higher education, or complex nonprofit environments.
- Experience with major gift prospect strategy, research, and qualification.
- Practical experience working with relational fundraising databases.
- Preferred: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with advanced skills preferred.
- Preferred: Familiarity with fundraising CRMs such as Kindsight AdvancementRM or Salesforce.
- Preferred: Experience using prospect research tools like DonorSearch, Relationship Science, Lexis-Nexis, Foundation Directory Online, Guidestar, and Blackbaud Giving.
Working Conditions
- This role can be entirely remote with occasional visits to the Portland OHSU office as needed.
- May require some work outside regular hours for meetings or events.
- Extended periods of computer use are expected.
Compensation
Starting salary ranges from $79,595 to $92,861 at Step I and $92,861 to $106,126 at Step II, influenced by experience and performance. Salaries are structured into steps allowing growth through tenure and skill development. Additional salary details include a foundation pension contribution of 12% of annual salary.
