Job description

Role overview

This full-time, fixed-term research appointment is based at the North Terrace Campus within the School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences. The position runs until 30 June 2029 and focuses on detrital geochronology beyond zircon. The salary range is $81,293 to $109,307 per year, plus 17% superannuation.

The role sits within the Continental Evolution Research Group (CERG), which works on reconstructing time-temperature histories linked to tectonic activity and mineralisation. The project is funded by the Australian Research Council and is centred on beta-decay geochronology for detrital sediments. The successful researcher will help develop and apply coupled Rb-Sr, K-Ca and Pb dating methods for K-bearing minerals, while also contributing to collaborative research on beta-decay geochronology.

About the university

Adelaide University is building a new institution that brings together strong legacy, ambitious goals and a focus on equity, excellence and contemporary education. The university aims to support global citizens, deliver a strong student experience and produce research with real-world impact. Its researchers contribute to work across energy, health, resources and the environment, and that expertise shapes teaching in advanced laboratories and practical learning settings.

The team and environment

The School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences explores the scientific foundations of the world around us, including space, oceans, atomic systems, chemical processes, planetary systems and natural resources. The school values curiosity, collaboration, innovation and lifelong learning, and the role offers the chance to join a research team at an exciting stage as Adelaide University launches.

Key responsibilities

  • Support the development of beta-decay geochronology approaches for detrital sediment studies.
  • Contribute to the application of coupled Rb-Sr, K-Ca and Pb dating of potassium-bearing minerals.
  • Take part in collaborative research projects related to geochronology methods and detrital provenance.
  • Carry out independent research and work effectively within a wider research team.
  • Contribute to a culture of inclusion, equity and diversity within the school.

Selection criteria

  • Doctoral qualification, or an equivalent degree, in Earth Sciences.
  • Strong research achievement and a clear interest in geochronology and detrital provenance.
  • Practical experience in collecting and interpreting isotopic data using laser ablation mass spectrometry.
  • Ability to work autonomously while also contributing productively to a team-based research environment.
  • Commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, with the ability to support a diverse school community.

Inclusion and workplace support

Adelaide University is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to a safe, inclusive and equitable workplace.
