Job description

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated Health & Safety Advisor to contribute to the Takitimu North Link project from our site office in Te Puna. Reporting directly to the H&S Manager, you will play a vital role in translating our Living Safely vision into practical, on-ground health and safety actions. This position requires a hands-on approach, working closely with on-site teams to promote and maintain high health and safety standards for our personnel, contractors, and clients.

The Takitimu North Link Stage 1 is a significant infrastructure development featuring a 6.8 km four-lane highway connecting SH2 near Loop Road in Te Puna to SH29 Takitimu Drive Toll Road, including an on-ramp from Fifteenth Avenue. This project enhances safety and efficiency by bypassing local towns and supports regional growth. It involves extensive earthworks, bridge and culvert construction, stream diversions, and wetland developments, being executed in partnership with HEB Construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Foster a transparent and proactive safety culture where team members feel empowered to speak up and support one another.
  • Maintain a visible and active presence on-site to guide and support field crews, subcontractors, and clients in health and safety matters.
  • Lead the planning and execution of risk assessments, safety audits, and site inspections, ensuring corrective actions are agreed upon and completed promptly.
  • Conduct thorough incident investigations to identify root causes and implement effective corrective measures.
  • Facilitate engaging toolbox talks, safety inductions, and training sessions to enhance safety knowledge and encourage safer practices.
  • Ensure consistent application of health and safety policies, systems, and procedures across projects.
  • Collaborate with operational leaders to promote ownership of safety responsibilities and improve overall health and safety performance.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report health and safety data to assist leadership in decision-making.
  • Build strong relationships to influence improved safety communication and work practices.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate health and safety records in compliance with legal and company standards.
  • Stay informed about industry developments and regulatory changes, contributing innovative ideas to enhance site safety.

Candidate Requirements

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in Health & Safety or an equivalent credential.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in a dedicated Health & Safety role, preferably within contracting and construction sectors.
  • Possession of a current Class 1 New Zealand driver’s license.
  • Practical experience with incident investigation, risk management, and safety auditing.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication capabilities, with the ability to influence and engage diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Thorough understanding of Health & Safety legislation, standards, and regulations applicable to civil construction.
  • Competency in conflict resolution, negotiation, and change management.
  • Skilled in data collection, analysis, research, and report preparation.
  • Familiarity with Safety II and Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles.
