Role overview
This position supports the operations team at Tilbury by manually decontaminating and sorting wood products, helping keep plant and site equipment running, and maintaining a safe and tidy working environment.
Core duties
- Make sure you understand the daily production schedule, your tasks, and how your role fits into the wider site workflow.
- Carry out daily pre-start checks on machinery and escalate any faults or defects.
- Support site activities by clearing tip bins, moving materials when asked, and helping with refuelling and housekeeping.
- Wear the correct personal protective equipment at all times and ensure it remains suitable for use.
- Follow all site and company rules so that work is completed safely and does not place you or others at risk.
- Work alongside the team to keep the site clean, orderly, and safe.
- Remove contamination from all relevant areas, including the picking station.
- Assist with cleaning duties and general site housekeeping.
- Inspect incoming wood loads and remove contaminants such as paper and plastic.
- Unload pallets from arriving wagons using a telehandler where trained and authorised.
- Use air hoses, water hoses, shovels, and brushes for cleaning and housekeeping tasks.
- Support site maintenance tasks within your level of competence.
- Carry out packaging and load inspection duties where trained.
- Operate mobile plant and static plant as required by the department, if trained.
- Follow company policies, procedures, health and safety requirements, and related documentation at all times.
- Keep company and customer information confidential.
- Maintain the “clean as you go” standard in work areas and shared spaces.
- Read, understand, and follow site procedures, emergency procedures, generic risk assessments, and isolation procedures relevant to your duties.
- Never use equipment unless you are trained and authorised to do so.
- Report policy breaches, health and safety concerns, near misses, damage, incidents, and accidents promptly.
- Track and record fuel used by mobile and static plant machinery.
- Record machine and activity defects as soon as they are identified.
- Log packaging details for incoming material according to training and site procedures.
- Handle downgraded, contaminated, or rejected inbound loads in line with site procedures.
- Complete pre-start checks and OEE records.
- Communicate clearly with colleagues, managers, customers, and other internal or external contacts.
- Act as traffic marshal when trained to help ensure safe movement on site.
- Use radio communication in operational areas whenever others may be affected by your actions.
- Work to the objectives and performance measures for your role and department.
- Cover colleagues, other departments, or other sites where required by absence or business need.
- Take part in training and personal development to build skills relevant to the role and business.
- Suggest improvements to work practices and department operations.
- Be willing to take on reasonable additional duties to meet business needs, with training provided where necessary.
