Job description
Position overview
Marburg University is hiring a funded research assistant position for a doctoral candidate at the Center for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO) in the Department of Chemistry. The role is based in the group of Dr. Liujuan Zheng, within the division of Prof. Dr. Gert Bange, and is available as soon as possible. The appointment is limited to 3 years, provided no prior qualification periods must be counted, and it is set at 65% of the regular working time.
The post is classified as pay grade E 13 under the collective agreement for the State of Hesse (TV-H). The reference number for the vacancy is ZE-0045-synmikro-wmz-2026.
Project focus
The doctoral project investigates how protein acetylation is regulated in bacteria. The research will make use of X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) to study the underlying regulatory mechanisms from structural and functional perspectives. In addition, the work includes enzyme engineering and the functional optimization of relevant enzymes.
Responsibilities
- Carry out research-related scientific work within the project.
- Purify proteins, prepare samples, and collect data for X-ray diffraction and cryo-EM experiments.
- Determine protein structures and analyze how structure relates to function.
- Study small-molecule–protein and protein–protein interactions using enzymatic and biophysical approaches.
- Perform enzyme engineering and assess the functionality of relevant enzymes.
- Conduct independent scientific work as part of the qualification process for the doctorate.
Profile
The university expects a completed scientific higher-education degree such as a diploma, master’s degree, or an equivalent qualification in chemistry or biochemistry. Applicants should already have strong experience in microbial protein biochemistry, especially in the area of protein acetylation.
Additional requirements include practical knowledge of protein crystal structure analysis, Western blotting, and the establishment of enzymatic assays. Experience with biophysical methods such as nano-DSF and mass photometry is also required. Good spoken and written English skills are necessary.
The position is intended for a person who is ready to pursue further academic qualification with the aim of completing a PhD in biochemistry or microbiology.
What the employer offers
- A highly dynamic research environment with modern and comprehensive research infrastructure.
- Free use of public transport in Hesse through the state ticket.
- Occupational pension provision through VBL.
- Support for career development through the Marburg Research Academy (MARA), the International Office, and the university teaching and learning support service.
Equal opportunity and working conditions
The university actively encourages women to apply and gives them preference in areas where they are underrepresented, provided qualifications are equal. As a family-friendly institution, it supports work-life balance, and a reduction in working hours is generally possible. Applicants with disabilities within the meaning of Section 2 (2) and (3) of the German Social Code IX (SGB IX) will be given preference when equally qualified. Application and interview costs will not be reimbursed.
Application details
Application deadline: 28 June 2026.
The role should begin as early as possible.
