Waste Collection Support Role

Job Summary

This is a support role within the Waste Management function at HMYOI Wetherby, LS22 5ED. The primary focus is to assist in meeting the establishment's waste management needs by collecting, processing, and disposing of waste materials and recyclables. This role involves working with prisoners but does not include direct supervision or line management responsibilities. It is a rotational position within the Waste Management and Recycling unit, ensuring work areas are maintained safely, cleanly, and tidily.

Responsibilities

• Support the waste management needs of the establishment by collecting, processing, and disposing of waste materials and recyclables.
• Escort prisoners during waste and recycling collection and disposal activities within the establishment.
• Contribute to prisoner reports, including those related to the Incentives and Earned Privileges (IEP) scheme, parole, and sentence planning.
• Assist in managing control measures for restricted waste and handle the collection and shredding of confidential waste.
• Escort technical contractors as required, adhering to the Local Security Strategy (LSS) and maintaining radio communication.
• Liaise with contractors for service orders, such as skip collections.
• Operate estates vehicles and plant equipment as necessary, potentially acting as a banksman to direct machinery operations.
• Ensure compliance with Health & Safety and security protocols for tools and plant machinery, conducting regular checks and completing documentation according to LSS and National Security Framework (NSF) guidelines.
• Adhere to all Health & Safety policies, procedures, and legislation, reporting any concerns to management and promoting a safe working environment.
• Operate within command modes as per local contingency plans and undertake incidental, emergency, or urgent tasks safely and within Service Delivery Agreement timescales.

Requirements

• Must be able to fulfill all spoken aspects of the role in English.
• Demonstrated ability to comply with relevant Health & Safety policies and regulations, such as COSHH.
• Previous experience or training in manual handling, basic security awareness, break-away techniques, and as a banksman may be advantageous.
• Basic knowledge of waste management principles is required, with a willingness to undertake specific training and courses.
• Must be able to pass a criminal record check and baseline personnel security standard checks.
• Must meet nationality requirements: UK nationals, nationals of the Republic of Ireland, Commonwealth citizens with the right to work in the UK, EU/EEA/Swiss nationals with settled/pre-settled status or a valid application, individuals with limited/indefinite leave to remain eligible for EUSS, and Turkish nationals with accrued right to work in the Civil Service.

This role is open to UK nationals, nationals of the Republic of Ireland, Commonwealth citizens with the right to work in the UK, nationals of the EU/Switzerland/Norway/Iceland and their family members with settled or pre-settled status under the EUSS or a valid application, individuals with limited or indefinite leave to remain eligible for EUSS, and Turkish nationals with accrued rights to work in the Civil Service.
