Job description
Role overview
This opening is for an Approved Premises Residential Worker based at Glogan Approved Premises in Bridgwater, with the work location listed as NPS, 59 Taunton Road, Bridgwater, TA6 3LP. The post is onsite only and is not suitable for hybrid working.
Working pattern
This role uses an annualised hours arrangement, giving flexibility to work either 625 hours or 1,250 hours each year. That works out as the equivalent of one or two 12-hour shifts each week. The rota includes both standard and unsocial hours across a 24-hour service, seven days a week. Candidates should be available for a broad range of day and night shifts, and availability will be discussed if an offer is made provisionally.
About Approved Premises
Approved Premises are mainly used for people released on licence who need a high level of supervision. The purpose of the setting is to support safe transition back into the community while maintaining public protection.
What the role involves
As a Residential Worker, you will support the supervision and welfare of residents living in the premises. You will help residents follow licence conditions, encourage safe behaviour, monitor conduct, complete inspections, and work with colleagues and partner agencies to support resettlement from custody into the community.
You will normally be based at one main Approved Premises, although you may need to work at other sites if business needs change.
Unsocial hours attract additional payment on top of the advertised annual salary. Premium rates apply as follows:
- Monday to Friday, 7pm to 8am: 30% premium
- Saturday 8am to Monday 8am: 50% premium
- Public and bank holidays, 8am to 8am: 50% premium, plus time off in lieu for the hours actually worked
What they are looking for
A degree is not required for this position. The hiring team is more interested in your personal qualities and your ability to work with people facing social or personal challenges. Experience in a similar environment is desirable. You should be empathetic, patient, and resilient, with enough numeracy and literacy to handle report writing.
About the organisation
The Probation Service supports people before or after prison and those serving community sentences. Its work focuses on rehabilitation and on protecting the public. The team is made up of people from many different backgrounds and values shared knowledge, support, and expertise.
Sponsorship and right to work
You must already have the right to work in the UK and in the Civil Service. This vacancy is not eligible for a new Skilled Worker visa. If you currently hold a Skilled Worker visa and it has been continuous, this can be raised during pre-employment checks for assessment under the relevant immigration rules and transitional arrangements. If successful, you must continue to meet the legal right-to-live-and-work requirements in the UK and Civil Service.
Selection and checks
The recruitment process uses Success Profiles and will assess behaviours, strengths, and experience. Shortlisted applicants should expect an interview or assessment before feedback is issued. A criminal record check is required, and anyone working with government assets must also complete baseline personnel security standard checks.
