Job description
Role overview
BCP Council is seeking a proactive Waste and Cleansing Officer to support the day-to-day running of the Waste and Cleansing teams across the BCP area.
Pay and progression
The starting salary is £32,061, pro rata for part-time working. This post sits in a structured pay range with clear career progression. All new employees normally start at the beginning of the band to keep pay decisions fair and consistent. Internal staff are usually appointed at the lower end of the band too, unless they are moving within the same profession and skill level and the band remains unchanged, in which case they may keep their current pay point.
Main duties
- Help organise, distribute and coordinate operational work so that people, equipment and time are used effectively.
- Offer practical technical support and direction to the operational team so service standards are met.
- Support hiring, induction, training and performance management for the team.
- Assist with service planning by assessing and scoping possible work, including cost information and tender details.
- Keep accurate service records and prepare reports covering activity, performance and any issues.
- Represent the service at meetings with internal and external partners to maintain effective relationships.
- Handle customer enquiries through the appropriate systems and ensure responses are prompt and correct.
- Maintain asset information and work schedules using the relevant IT systems.
- Stand in for Waste and Cleansing Operations Managers when required.
- Carry out employment-related investigations, including evidence gathering, interviews, and preparing and presenting information at hearings.
- Complete compliance and welfare checks for operational staff.
Working pattern
This is a 37-hour-per-week role, Monday to Friday, although occasional weekend work may be needed. There are two vacancies: one early-shift post and one afternoon/early-evening post. Operating hours run from 04:30 to 20:30.
You may also be asked to cover other supervisor shifts or work from other locations within the BCP area from time to time.
What the council is looking for
The ideal applicant will have waste industry experience, a track record of leading and developing motivated teams, the ability to stay calm when solving problems, and a strong focus on excellent customer service.
A current valid driving licence is essential, and Category C is preferred.
