Role overview
BCP Council’s Highway Delivery Team is hiring skilled highway operatives to support a range of highway works. The position covers routine maintenance, construction schemes, traffic management, winter service delivery, and other related tasks. The role is based at either Hatch Pond Road Depot in Poole or Southcote Road Depot in Bournemouth.
Pay and progression
The starting pay is £28,598 per year, Band 5, with pro rata payment for part-time colleagues. In addition, the role includes a £100 monthly Recruitment & Retention payment. There is also an opportunity to boost earnings by taking part in the out-of-hours rota. All new starters enter at the band’s entry point, with clear progression available as experience and contribution grow.
What you will be doing
You will help deliver highway maintenance and improvement works across the network, including patching, remedial repairs, small and major resurfacing projects, traffic management on rural and urban roads, and support for high-speed routes where required. The work is focused on improving the public highway for local residents and visitors.
Experience and key attributes
The council is looking for candidates with practical experience in highways maintenance, highways construction or resurfacing, and traffic management deployment. A Class C1 or Class C driving licence is also required. You should be able to stay calm and courteous when dealing with members of the public.
