Job description
About the Organization
A nonprofit organization in the Washington DC metro area is expanding its housing work and is seeking a Vice President of Construction to support the continued delivery of new residential homes. This is a newly created leadership position focused on building a strong construction function that delivers work efficiently, safely, and to a consistently high standard. The role places special emphasis on effective subcontractor coordination and meaningful volunteer involvement, with an aim to create long-term value for the communities served.
The organization is looking for a mission-aligned construction leader with substantial experience in the field. A background in residential homebuilding is preferred, though professionals from commercial construction will also be considered. This opportunity is well suited to a senior leader who enjoys improving systems, guiding teams, and scaling operations in a way that supports both growth and mission delivery.
Role Overview
As Vice President of Construction, you will work closely with the President, senior leadership, and the Board to shape construction strategy and growth. You will turn mission objectives into practical development and construction plans, ensure smooth cross-functional coordination, and help establish a culture rooted in accountability, inclusion, safety, and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Work with the President, leadership team, and Board to guide strategy and expansion within the construction function.
- Convert mission-focused objectives into clear plans for construction and development.
- Strengthen collaboration across departments so that plans are aligned and executed effectively.
- Build a team culture that values accountability, inclusion, safety, and ongoing improvement.
- Oversee all residential construction activity from initiation through completion, including new builds and renovation work.
- Ensure projects are completed on schedule, within budget, and in line with contract requirements and quality expectations.
- Keep work flowing through strong planning and scheduling discipline.
- Manage budgets, costs, and overall financial performance with sound fiscal control.
- Protect the organization by maintaining compliance, reducing risk, and supporting a strong safety environment.
- Develop productive relationships with municipalities, development partners, subcontractors, and community stakeholders.
- Bring forward new building methods and ideas that improve efficiency and sustainability.
- Hire, guide, and grow a high-performing construction team.
- Coach team members, support professional development, and manage performance effectively.
- Encourage volunteer participation and help ensure volunteers feel recognized and valued.
Requirements
- At least 15 years of progressive construction experience with a general contractor.
- Strong experience in construction operations and project delivery, with a preference for residential homebuilding; commercial construction experience is also acceptable.
- Demonstrated success delivering multiple concurrent projects at volume, including both new construction and renovation, while meeting quality, schedule, and cost goals.
- At least 5 years of experience leading and developing teams such as superintendents and/or project managers, with direct responsibility for performance, coaching, and growth.
- Solid background in managing budgets, contracts, subcontractor coordination, and scheduling.
- Experience in nonprofit, community development, or volunteer-led settings is preferred.
- Strong alignment with the organization’s mission and values.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Engineering, or Business Management is strongly preferred.
- Comfort using Microsoft Office and construction/project management software.
- Must live within reach of the organization’s office, stakeholder meetings, and projects across DC, Maryland, and Virginia.
- This is a five-day on-site role.

The base salary range for this position is $170,000 to $200,000, depending on experience and skill set.
