Job description
Role overview
This opportunity is for a User Researcher or Senior User Researcher to support digital product and service work across several sectors, with particularly strong demand in government projects. The position can be either a permanent role or a 12-month fixed-term contract, with pay between £42,000 and £55,000 depending on experience.
You must be based in the UK. The role offers flexibility to work from the Macclesfield office or from home.
What the role involves
You will join multi-disciplinary project teams to understand the context, expectations, and behaviours of the people who use the products and services being designed. The work requires selecting suitable research methods, running engagement activities, and turning findings into clear, practical insight for clients and wider teams.
Experience and approach
The employer is looking for someone with several years of experience in a user research role, ideally gained in an agency setting or in a UK government/public sector environment. If your background is in a closely related area and you can demonstrate strong user research capability, you are also encouraged to apply.
Ideal candidates will be comfortable with agile, user-centred ways of working, able to manage deadlines, and willing to adapt as project needs change. Strong collaboration, analysis, and communication skills are essential.
Research and communication methods
You should be confident planning and delivering a range of research activities, including interviews, surveys, usability testing, and diary studies. You will also need to present findings in formats such as workshops, reports, videos, user journey maps, personas, and similar outputs.
Additional design-led experience in areas such as content, UX, digital transformation, accessibility, or other user-centred disciplines would be a welcome complement to your research background.
Working environment
The organisation describes its working model as fully hybrid, with its main hub in Macclesfield, Cheshire and team members based across the UK. The team values regular meet-ups, event attendance, and ongoing learning. The company also places strong emphasis on inclusion, equity, and diversity, supported by employee resource groups and wider internal initiatives.
Benefits
The package includes a 35-hour working week, 28 days of annual leave plus bank holidays, extra leave for life events, length of service, and volunteering, plus the option to move bank holidays to other dates. Other benefits include enhanced maternity, partner, and adoption policies, a 6% employer pension contribution, income protection, life assurance, and two Employee Assistance Programmes.
About the company
The business is a human-centred design, development, and consulting company that creates usable, accessible, and engaging digital products and services. It works with clients in the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors and focuses on building long-term strategic partnerships. Established in 2007, it has grown from a small team into a respected UK user-centred design and digital agency and is also known for organising the Camp Digital conference.
Application process
To apply, candidates should email their latest CV and may also include a portfolio or recent work examples. Applicants should mention whether they are seeking a permanent role, a 12-month fixed-term contract, or are open to either.
Applications are being reviewed as they arrive, and interviews will be arranged on a rolling basis. The hiring process has two stages. The employer states that recruitment aims to be fair and inclusive and encourages applicants from a wide range of backgrounds, including people with access needs and those who require flexible working patterns. If adjustments or individual support are needed, candidates may request a discussion during the process.

No agencies are requested for this vacancy.
