Trainee Respiratory & Sleep Clinical Scientist - Respiratory Physiology

About the Role

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), one of the UK's largest healthcare systems with around 40,000 employees, serves over 1.15 million people directly and 2.2 million including regional services. NHSGGC in partnership with NHS Education Scotland is offering a 3-year funded training position as a Clinical Scientist in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology. This role provides hands-on experience within a multidisciplinary team delivering specialist respiratory and sleep physiology services to adult patients referred from various clinical disciplines. The successful candidate will develop the essential skills and knowledge required for Clinical Scientist registration while contributing to patient-focused care.

Location and Working Pattern

• The post is based primarily at Gartnavel General Hospital in Glasgow but requires rotational work across other NHSGGC sites.
• The position requires 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday, primarily day shifts with some night and back shifts rotation.

Key Responsibilities

• Complete structured workplace training in Respiratory and Sleep Physiology aligned with the National School of Healthcare Science academic programme.
• Perform and interpret specialized diagnostic tests such as pulmonary function testing, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and support sleep physiology services.
• Rotate through various departments to gain broad clinical experience alongside experienced clinical scientists and multidisciplinary teams.
• Provide empathetic, patient-centred care while exhibiting excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Engage in ongoing professional development throughout the training period.

Candidate Requirements

• Possess a relevant BSc (Hons) degree in a science discipline.
• Commitment to a 3-year structured Clinical Scientist training programme blending workplace learning with academic studies (including distance learning and block release).
• Ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal capabilities.
• Willingness to travel and work across multiple NHSGGC locations as part of rotational training.
