About the opportunity

This role supports the piping and mechanical team in a shipbuilding setting by helping prepare materials, tools, and equipment, alongside carrying out general cleaning tasks as instructed by the direct supervisor.

The position is aimed at people who are keen to build a lasting career in the trades. A strong commitment to progressing in the field is important, and candidates may be considered for an apprenticeship in the piping and mechanical team if their performance and suitability meet expectations.

Key duties

  • Carry out sentry duties for confined space entry and fire watch activities.
  • Support trades staff by preparing the materials, tools, and equipment needed for each job.
  • Perform cleaning tasks across the workshop and vessels under construction.
  • Follow Austal’s HSEQ policies and procedures and apply them in daily work.
  • Take responsibility for maintaining HSEQ standards for yourself and your team.
  • Keep work areas orderly and ensure housekeeping standards are maintained.

Requirements

  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Capacity to work safely and in an acceptable manner.
  • Ability to use standard hand tools.
  • Good time management and the ability to meet supervisor-set targets.
  • Good physical fitness and health.
  • Currently studying toward, or already holding, a Certificate II in Engineering.
  • At least 1 year of experience in engineering or construction as a trade assistant.
  • Forklift licence.
  • EWP licence with 11m endorsement.
  • Ability to work in line with an issued permit.
  • Knowledge of first attack fire-fighting equipment.
  • At least 1 year of experience in confined space entry sentry and fire sentry duties.
