About the Role
The Thomas B. Finan Center, an 88-bed inpatient psychiatric hospital located in Cumberland, Maryland and operated by the State of Maryland, seeks a Therapeutic Recreator I, CI. This position involves intermediate-level responsibilities including the assessment, planning, execution, and performance of therapeutic recreation to support treatment of mentally ill, elderly, physically ill or disabled patients, or developmentally disabled clients. This role does not include supervisory duties and is based onsite at the Finan Center, approximately two and a half hours from Baltimore.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct assessments and develop therapeutic recreation plans tailored to patient needs.
- Implement and facilitate individual and group therapeutic recreation activities to aid in treatment.
- Work closely with patients across psychiatric and developmental disability settings, responding effectively to their unique needs.
Qualifications and Experience
- Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in therapeutic recreation or recreation with a therapeutic recreation major from an accredited institution.
- No prior experience is required; however, current certification by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification can replace educational requirements.
- Professional experience working under licensed therapists in mental health or developmental disability contexts, responsible for client assessments and recreation therapy planning and evaluation, may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
- Military experience as a commissioned officer in relevant physical therapy or therapeutic specialties can also substitute for educational requirements.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with psychiatric patient populations.
- Proven ability to lead group and individual therapeutic recreational activities.
Licensing and Certifications
- A valid Maryland state driver's license is required if duties include vehicle operation, potentially requiring specific class licenses.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification with maintenance of current status may be necessary.
- Where applicable, certification in Red Cross Life Saving and Water Safety may be required for work involving swimming pool facilities.
