Position Overview
The Howard University Showtime Band seeks a passionate and skilled Teaching Assistant and Dance Coach to support the Ooh La La! Dance-line, a prominent and highly respected HBCU dance team. This position blends leadership, mentorship, and performance training to uphold the team’s tradition of excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and direct regular rehearsals for the Ooh La La! Dance Team.
- Instruct and reinforce a range of dance styles including ballet, jazz, modern, hip-hop, and HBCU-specific dance techniques.
- Create and refine choreography for football games, pep rallies, and campus events.
- Prepare team members for performance engagements both on campus and at external venues.
- Travel with the team to home and away football games throughout the season.
- Support the artistic vision and goals of the Showtime Band program.
- Cultivate discipline, teamwork, and strive for performance excellence within the dance team.
- Act as a mentor and positive role model to student dancers.
Candidate Qualifications
- Proven experience in teaching and coaching various dance styles.
- Strong technical expertise across ballet, jazz, modern, hip-hop, and HBCU dance-line styles.
- Skillful in choreography for group dance performances.
- Effective leadership abilities paired with strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficient in managing rehearsals and upholding high artistic standards.
- Willingness and availability for rehearsals, performances, and travel commitments.
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with HBCU bands or collegiate dancelines.
- Background in performance training and preparation for shows.
- Familiarity with student organizations or university program environments.
Work Schedule and Commitment
- Part-time role primarily centered around evening and weekend rehearsals.
- Travel to football games required during the season.
