Job description

Role overview

This opportunity is for a Cookery Educator to join TAFE Queensland and deliver vocational training in hospitality and commercial cookery. The role is suited to someone who is enthusiastic about sharing industry knowledge and supporting learners through practical, job-ready education.

About the organisation

TAFE Queensland is the state’s largest and longest-established provider of vocational education and training. With more than 140 years of experience, it delivers industry-aligned learning across campus, online, and workplace settings. The organisation focuses on practical skills development that helps people build careers, strengthen communities, and support local industries.

Working here means joining a highly experienced team that stays closely connected to industry and is committed to best-practice, innovative training.

What this role involves

As a TAFE Teacher, you will help plan, deliver, and assess quality learning for a diverse student group. The teaching scope includes VET programs designed around student outcomes, strong links with industry and other education providers, and the use of up-to-date teaching methods and workplace-relevant practice.

The position reports to the Business Manager and is based mainly in Townsville, Queensland. You may also be asked to work from other TAFE Queensland campuses when required.

Key responsibilities

You will be expected to provide a learner-focused teaching experience, support student progress, and contribute to program quality through effective delivery, assessment, and collaboration.

  • Deliver teaching that is centred on student needs and demonstrates strong instructional practice.
  • Manage learning effectively across classroom, workplace, simulated, and online environments while supporting engagement and achievement.
  • Use flexible, blended, and inclusive teaching approaches suited to different learner groups, including new students and those with additional support needs.
  • Create, develop, and apply assessment methods that align with industry standards and national training package requirements.
  • Take part in ongoing improvement initiatives that strengthen training and assessment quality.
  • Build productive relationships with students, client groups, and colleagues through meetings, reference groups, events, forums, and feedback processes.
  • Encourage safe work habits and sustainable practices in all learning and assessment settings.
  • Help design, review, and improve educational programs.
  • Continue professional learning to keep teaching practice and industry knowledge current.
  • Handle administrative tasks such as attendance tracking, student progress monitoring, support referrals, and learner feedback.
  • Support workplace culture by reflecting TAFE Queensland values including Safety First, Working Together, Focusing on our Customer, Taking Responsibility, and Showing Initiative.

How you will be assessed

Selection will focus on your capability to teach effectively, work collaboratively, stay current with industry and training practice, and deliver an inclusive learning experience.

  • Knowledge of national training packages and accredited courses, with the ability to support competency development and respond to both industry and learner needs.
  • Ability to manage teaching and learning effectively and to develop practical, innovative, and technology-supported training solutions.
  • Strong initiative, self-management, teamwork, and adaptability, along with well-developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to continuous learning and maintaining current industry and teaching skills, including confidence using educational technology and learning management systems.
  • Understanding of safe, fair, and non-discriminatory work practices, with the ability to provide a flexible, inclusive, and high-quality student experience.

Mandatory qualifications and requirements

Applicants must meet the following conditions and credentials:

  • Vocational competence at least equal to the level being delivered and assessed.
  • Certificate III in Commercial Cookery.
  • One approved training and assessment qualification, such as Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116 or TAE40122), Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40110) plus TAELLN411 and TAEASS502, Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (TAE50111 or TAE50116), Diploma of Training Design and Development (TAE50211 or TAE50216), or a higher adult education qualification approved by TAFE Queensland.
  • Current industry skills directly relevant to the training and assessment being delivered.
  • Up-to-date knowledge and capability in vocational training and learning that informs assessment and delivery.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development in vocational training, learning, assessment, and competency-based training practices.
