An opening is available within the Nelson Ecology team for a Taxonomist / Lab Consultant. This comes at a dynamic period of growth with new projects launching and a transition to a newly constructed office and laboratory space in Richmond.

Primary Duties

  • Analyze and identify macroinvertebrate samples from both marine and freshwater habitats within a specialised taxonomy laboratory.
  • Conduct data gathering, entry, and organization related to sample analysis.
  • Develop skills related to marine and/or freshwater taxonomy.
  • Collaborate effectively within the Nelson team and work cohesively in close teamwork settings.

Qualifications and Desired Experience

  • Possess a university qualification within environmental science or hold a minimum of two years relevant professional experience.
  • Proficient in processing and accurate identification of benthic macroinvertebrates native to New Zealand using specialized identification keys.
  • Experience operating stereo and compound microscopes for specimen analysis.
  • Skilled in setting up and maintaining biological reference collections.
  • Competent in compiling, maintaining, and managing data records and files.
  • Fieldwork experience in freshwater and/or marine contexts is advantageous.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and reporting abilities.
  • Hold a clean and valid New Zealand driver’s license.
  • New Zealand citizenship or valid work rights are mandatory.
