Job Summary

The Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 has enabled Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, alongside its local authority partners — including Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Newport, Monmouthshire, and Torfaen — to establish innovative community-based mental health services across Gwent. The Support Time and Recovery Worker (STaR) role focuses on delivering support, guidance, and brief psychological interventions to adults experiencing mild to moderate or stable, enduring mental health difficulties.

Role Responsibilities

The post holder will provide person-centered assistance to a caseload of service users with various mild to moderate mental health needs, fostering their recovery and helping them sustain community connections. Engagements take place through flexible mediums such as face-to-face meetings, video calls, or telephone sessions, both individually and in groups. Supporting the multi-disciplinary team, the worker will contribute to developing creative approaches that enhance recovery and promote social inclusion.

Key responsibilities include:

• Delivering 1:1 and group support targeting mental health recovery.
• Applying knowledge of diverse psychological therapies, including Psychoeducation, CBT-informed approaches, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, and digital CBT tools.
• Establishing and nurturing positive therapeutic relationships with service users and collaborating with colleagues across health, local authorities, and third sector organizations.
• Actively participating in training, supervision, and skills development opportunities.

Qualifications and Experience

• Minimum requirement of NVQ Level 3 in Health or Social Care or a relevant foundation degree.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development in mental health fields.
• Preferred qualifications include NVQ Level 4 or Mental Health Level 1 Certificate, and formal training/competency in CBT to diploma equivalent.
• Proven experience working in social, mental health, or related care settings.
• Experience providing therapeutic interventions in both individual and group settings.

Skills

• Strong ability to operate effectively within a professional team.
• Excellent communication skills to form therapeutic relationships.
• Capability to support clients with recovery-focused, inclusive strategies, work prioritization, advocacy, and facilitating access to community resources.
• Basic IT competencies and record-keeping skills are advantageous.
